Frequently Asked Questions

ORDERING & KITS

What's in a kit?

38 plug plants (9 to 12 species) sized to cover about 100 sq ft, with a planting plan and care guide.

When do kits ship?

Spring kits ship in mid-May; fall kits ship in September. We ship Monday–Wednesday only, so plants don't sit in a warehouse over the weekend.

Where do you ship?

Wisconsin only for now.

How much is shipping?

$29 for the first kit and $15 for each additional kit. Pickup is free.

When is my card charged?

You pay a 25% deposit when you order, and save your card with Square. The rest is charged to that card when your order ships or is ready for pickup. Cancel by April 15 (spring) or August 15 (fall) for a full refund.

Can I pick up instead?

Yes. Choose pickup when you order and we'll email you a pickup date and location in the La Crosse area.

What if a plant in my kit isn't available?

Growing plants is farming, so sometimes a species fails or sells out. If that happens, we'll substitute a similar native species suited to the same conditions.

PLANTS & PLANTING

What's a plug?

A young plant grown in a deep, narrow cell. Plugs establish quickly and are the most affordable way to plant a whole garden.

When should I plant?

Spring (mid-May through June) or early fall (September). Plant as soon as you can after your plants arrive.

How much should I water?

Water every day for the first week after planting. After that, make sure they get a good soaking at least once a week, from rain or a hose, through the first season. After year one, most natives need little or no watering.

Will deer and rabbits eat them?

Some will be browsed, especially young plants. Fencing or repellent for the first season helps.

Why does my garden look small the first year?

Natives spend their first year or two growing roots. Sleep, creep, leap: expect a big jump in year three.

Do you use pesticides or synthetic fertilizers?

No. We grow without synthetic fertilizers or systemic pesticides.

What about jumping worms?

We grow in worm-free potting media on raised benches to keep jumping worms out of our plants.
